As a result it was given "University Status" in 1973 by government decree. Today Tyumen State University is a powerful educational center for the region, with a developed network of branches and over 25,000 students. ABOUT THE CITY Tyumen is one of the oldest Russian cities in Siberia, having been founded in 1586. Since 1944, the city has been the administrative center of the largest region in Russia. The steep banks of the Tura River also provide panoramic views of the whole Siberian plain. Tyumen Region extends north right up to the Arctic Circle and includes areas of tundra, forest-tundra, taiga, and forest-steppe.
