GENERAL INFORMATION
Tyumen State University is one of the oldest higher education establishments
in Western Siberia, with a history dating back to 1930. As the Western
Siberian region developed into one of the most important sources of fuel
and raw materials in Russia, Tyumen's Institute of Higher Education underwent
considerable change. As a result it was given "University Status"
in 1973 by government decree. Today Tyumen State University is a powerful
educational center for the region, with a developed network of branches
and over 25,000 students.
ABOUT THE CITY
Tyumen is one of the oldest Russian cities in Siberia, having
been founded in 1586. Since 1944, the city has been the administrative
center of the largest region in Russia. By comparison, the region's territory
covers three times the area of France, six times that of the United Kingdom
or five times that of Germany. Located in a picturesque area on the high
banks of the Tura River, the city has about 600,000 inhabitants.
The climate is continental, characterized by rather severe snowy winters,
warm summers and short transitional seasons. The average temperature in
the coldest month of January is -17.8 Degrees Celsius, while the average
in the warmest month of July is +17.2 Degrees Celsius. The lowest temperatures
are in the -50 Degrees Celsius area and the highest temperatures around
+40 Degrees Celsius. Winter in Tyumen lasts from November to March.
Tyumen is surrounded by large tracts of pine forest. The countryside,
with its large lakes and hot springs, provides tourist sites and health
spas for people to relax. The steep banks of the Tura River also provide
panoramic views of the whole Siberian plain. Tyumen Region extends north
right up to the Arctic Circle and includes areas of tundra, forest-tundra,
taiga, and forest-steppe. Under northern lights the temperature often
falls below -60 Degrees Celsius, while Ishim, on the southern border of
the region, receives as much sunshine as Odessa.
