Going Global 2017: British Council interested in the UT experience

UT is the only Russian university invited to the Going Global 2017 conference by the British Council.

The annual Going Global conference for leaders in international education, organized by the British Council, took place in London on 22-24 May and gathered more than 900 experts from 77 countries, including ministers for education and science, rectors and vice rectors of the world's top universities. The conference is one of the world's main events for the discussion of the higher education trends and perspectives for cooperation between universities.

The University of Tyumen was the only Russian university invited to the Going Global 2017 conference by the British Council. Moreover, UT received a grant from the Council. UT’s Vice Rector for Research and International Affairs, Andrei Tolstikov, and the Director of the UT Centre for Academic WritingImpuls”, Valeria Evdash, represented the University.

Andrei Tolstikov along with Helen Silvester, Director of Education and Wider Europe (British Council), and representatives of the UK Association of Colleges, the Council of Higher Education (Turkey) and the Almaty Development Centre (Kazakhstan) participated in a panel discussion “A tale of future cities: international collaboration”. There they discussed cases of regional universities building systemic relations with local government and the community for the sustainable development of higher education. UT initiatives on support services for foreigners were favorably appraised by Director of the HSE Office of Internationalisation and coordinator of the Global Universities Association working group, Yulia Grinkevich.

At the conference, representatives of UT discussed opportunities for cooperation with several British, Brazilian, Indian, Malaysian and Philippine universities.

On 25 May, the UT delegation participated in a conference held in London devoted to the internationalisation of higher education through the English language, where international experts shared their experience of creating an English-speaking environment at universities. Representatives of UT and the research section of the Nature journal discussed cooperation to enhance the research competencies of UT staff and improve the quality of research publications.

As part of the 5-100 Project, UT strives to create an English-speaking environment within the university, in part to enhance the professional capabilities of the staff and students of the Academic Writing Centre. To achieve this goal, UT has organized a number of academic events in conjunction with the British Council, including the ResearcherConnect project, which was made possible due to a grant from the British Embassy.

Participation in the Going Global conference is expected to improve UT’s recognition and reputation in the international higher education community.
