Way to the North Ends in the South
After carrying out fieldwork in tundra, participants of the UTMN International Summer School Way to the North 2017 travelled all over Tyumen Region. In one and a half weeks, they visited almost ten cities and villages in the vast Tyumen Region.
“It was an official aspect of the School’s programme”, commented one of the School’s coordinators, Tair Rakhmanov, Head of UTMN International Student & Scholar Services. “Just like fieldwork, the tour was designed to cover a wide range of cultural and educational interaction, in particular, to introduce Siberian culture and mentality, develop youth cooperation and strengthen partnerships between educational institutions”.
During their trip, Way to the North participants visited Nadym and Tarko-Sale in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug, Surgut and Khanty-Mansiysk in the Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug as well as Tobolsk, the ancient capital of Siberia, and the UTMN Biostation at Lake Kuchak in the south of the region. The tour ended in Tyumen.
Participants of the International School came from UTMN, Ryazan, Perm, Saint-Petersburg, the University of Münster, Germany, and the State University of New York (SUNY), USA. The School was organized with the assistance of the Yamalo-Nenets Department of Research and Innovation, the Interregional Expedition Center Arctic (Salekhard), the Arctic Research Centre (Nadym) and the University of Münster.
