UTMN Joins Forces with the Russian Academy of Sciences’s All-Russian Research Institute of Plant Protection

Project 5-100 11 December 2017
The University of Tyumen and the Russian Academy of Sciences’s All-Russian Research Institute of Plant Protection (Saint Petersburg) signed a cooperation agreement at the UTMN Academic Council meeting.

The two institutions plan to cooperate in the spheres of research and training of high-qualified specialists. In particular, they intend to collaborate on research, including projects supported by grants from international and federal foundations.

“The agreement differs from those we have signed before, as the All-Russian Research Institute of Plant Protection will become a UTMN strategic partner for the X-BIO project,” said UTMN Rector Valery Falkov. “X-BIO is a strategically important academic project realized as part of the 5-100 project. Establishing X-BIO will let the university enhance its competitiveness and become an international-level centre of excellence in the sphere of plant biosafety. I believe that research in this field is extremely relevant, for both Russia and other countries”.

Viktor Dolzhenko, Deputy Director for Research at the All-Russian Research Institute of Plant Protection and academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, expressed his interest in cooperation with UTMN. “We consider the X-BIO project to be a centre for plant and environmental biosafety. We won’t achieve anything in these innovative fields without qualified specialists,” said Viktor Dolzhenko. “We need young scientists and highly qualified teachers. I am sure that, with the support of UTMN, we will make progress in this sphere”.

As part of the partnership, a research laboratory for plant protection will be established at UTMN. Moreover, a joint English-taught interdisciplinary educational programme ‘Plant BIOSecurity’ is to be launched.

The All-Russian Research Institute of Plant Protection’s staff is expected to come to teach to UTMN, assist in managing MSc and PhD theses and organize scientific and methodological events and research internships at the institute.
