International Landscape Conference Starts

Today, 22 August, the official opening of the XII International conference Landscape-Ecological Support for Rational Nature Management and Sustainable Development took place at UTMN. The conference is being attended by more than one hundred Russian and international researchers and specialists in landscape science. UTMN Vice Rector Valery Dubitsky greeted the guests with a welcome speech.


At the first plenary session, researchers from various countries presented around ten conceptual papers. In particular, Professor Kirill Dyakonov, associate member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Head of the Department of Physical Geography and Landscape Science of Moscow State University, gave a talk on the problems and further development of landscape science. His colleague, Professor Alexey Reteyum, presented the geosystem concept in modern landscape science. The Head of the Department of Soil Science, Geology and Landscape Science at Moscow Timiryazev Agricultural Academy, academic of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Valery Kiryushin, considered structural and functional analysis of landscape as a basis for territory planning. Christine Fürst, professor of Sustainable Landscape Development, Martin Luther University of Halle-Wittenberg (Germany), President of the International Association of Landscape Ecology (IALE), spoke on the challenges of, and approaches to, modelling socio-ecological systems.

The second half of the first day was taken up by thematic sessions.

“The first day of the conference has gone well, we’ve heard reports on the current environmental situation by world-renowned landscape scientists”, commented the Deputy Chairman of the conference organizing committee – the Director of UTMN Institute of Earth Sciences, Vitaly Khoroshavin. “Tomorrow we are going on a field trip - a tour of the Pripyshminskiye Bory National Park, interesting due to its well-organized landscape at the border between the Urals and West Siberia. The programme also includes a poster session, a roundtable and a plenary session at the UTMN field campus Lukashino”.    

According to the chairman of the programme committee, Kirill Dyakonov, this forum aims to promote advanced landscape study, with its participants discussing constructive ways of landscape modelling, the training of landscape specialists, methods of teaching Geography at school and many other issues.

The Conference was organized by the University of Tyumen, Lomonosov Moscow State University (Faculty of Geography) and the Russian Geographical Society. On 26 August, the last day of the Conference, participants will observe the SIBUR-Tobolsk site and other places of interest in the old capital of Siberia.
