Igor Chubarov: “There is hope in the revitalization of regional centers”
On November 5th Tyumen State University held an academic conference titled Immersion Duration: from Short Videos and Films, to Series and Computer Games. Among the participants of the conference were leading researchers in modern visual culture from Moscow State University, Saint Petersburg State University, Higher School of Economics, Tomsk State University, and German and Lithuanian universities. Meeting with the famous Russian film director Andrey Kravchuk was a great introduction to the conference. Both events were well- attended and gathered more than 100 attendees each.
Igor Chubarov (specialist in the field of media theory and analytic anthropology, Deputy Head of the MSU Center for Modern Philosophy and Social Studies, member of the editorial board of the journal Logos) gave a lecture titled “Series form - for how long are we ready to tolerate art and each other today?”. He gave his opinion on the role and perspectives of regional universities to the UT press office correspondent.
“Today, the development of provincial cities gives young people lots of opportunities. Local universities can outpace Moscow and Saint Petersburg at various and unexpected innovative fields, which will also be supported by the people involved. In this way a breakthrough in world science can be made,” says Igor Chubarov in his interview with the UT press office correspondent. “Taking into consideration the peculiarities of modern communication, I consider it possible. The point is to implement it here, for young people not to have to go Moscow, to make it possible to do interdisciplinary research and, thereby, assist in the cooperation between different economic layers, everyday social life, and people. Negligence in these spheres once caused collapse of Soviet culture. Such narrowness, segregation based on city, profession, or nationality, the lack of connection with world context ruined this initially interesting Soviet project. And today, I guess, there is revival in some of these original hopes. There is hope in the revitalization of regional centers. That’s why I am interested in coming to Tyumen, and maybe even in living here.”
The conference was organized on the base of the School of Advanced Studies. The UT School of Advanced Studies offers its students a new system of relations between science, education and art. At the same time, the School aims to emerge as an intellectual platform for carrying out various educational and cultural events.
The School of Advanced Studies will open its doors to students in 2017. The first intake of bachelor's students will all receive full scholarships. The School gives talented applicants from Tyumen and the Tyumen region an opportunity to continue their education in their home city. The School of Advanced Studies is also delighted to welcome the best applicants from other regions.
