Olga Vasilieva and Mikhail Kotyukov Appointed Ministers of Newly Reformed Ministry of Education and Science

In accordance with the decrees signed by the Russian President Vladimir Putin, Olga Vasilieva has been appointed Minister of Enlightenment of the Russian Federation, while Mikhail Kotyukov, ex-Director of the Federal Agency for Scientific Organisations, have become Minister of Science and Higher Education



Earlier this month, the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation was divided into two departments: the Ministry of Enlightenment and the Ministry of Science and Higher Education.

New Ministry of Enlightenment is now in charge of primary education, secondary and professional education, supplementary education for children and adults, as well as issues of parenting, guardianship and custody and managing state property in these spheres. 

The Ministry of Science and Higher Education was delegated to manage issues related to higher education, research and technological innovation activity, nanotechnology, development of federal centres for research and high technology, governmental scientific centres and towns with high concentrations of research and development facilities, intellectual property (excluding Rospatent’s sphere of influence) and handling relevant property. To fulfill all the duties, the new Ministry will receive the executive powers previously held by the Federal Agency for Scientific Organisations, which managed finance and property of the Russian Academy of Sciences. In turn, the Federal Agency for Scientific Organisations will be abolished.
