About the Laboratory
The laboratory was created on May 25th, 2012 on the basis of the Bioinformatics and Biosystematics Research Institute, as part of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF)–supported Russian-German research project titled “Sustainable land management and climate change adaptations in the agricultural areas of the Tyumen region” ("SASCHA").
Research Focus
The laboratory studies biodiversity and various aspects of ecological communities.
The primary research focus is on soil zoology. Namely, we examine how biomes interact with the surrounding soil and plant environments.
The laboratory is among the world’s leaders in soil mite studies.
The laboratory is distinguished by its openness to international collaboration. Over the years, we have established numerous partnerships and worked together on research projects with world-leading biodiversity research organizations from Germany, USA, New Zealand, Latin America, Africa, and Southeast Asia.
Structure
The International Comprehensive Research Laboratory for Climate Change, Land Use, and Biodiversity (X-BIO Institute) has been operating since May 25, 2012. Its establishment was the result of a memorandum on the implementation of SASCHA, a major Russian-German project supported by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).
Today, the laboratory is a prominent global research center in the fields of soil zoology and acarology (the study of mites and ticks), as well as a leading platform for studying carbon balance in natural and transformed geosystems.
We actively develop international partnerships, with a particular focus on joint research with specialists from Brazil and other Latin American countries, while strengthening scientific ties with Central Asian nations, including Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan. Furthermore, the laboratory maintains professional contacts and collaborations with numerous research centers worldwide, bridging fundamental discoveries with practical solutions for the global climate agenda.
