200 Years of Russian Research in the Amazon: University of Tyumen Opens a New Chapter
A roundtable discussion titled "200 Years Since Academician G. I. Langsdorff’s Expedition to the Amazon" was held at the main building of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ). Participants addressed not only the historical significance of the first studies of the region’s flora, fauna, and the lifestyles of its Indigenous peoples conducted by Russian scholars, but also contemporary prospects for research into biodiversity, climate change, and a sustainable bioeconomy.
The roundtable was opened with remarks by Ivan Romanchuk, Rector of the University of Tyumen, Roberto de Andrade Medronho, Rector of UFRJ, and Ayrton Sieben, Rector of the Federal University of Northern Tocantins (UFNT).
Earlier this month, the University of Tyumen signed a comprehensive package of cooperation agreements with Brazil’s leading institution, the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), in the presence of Valery Falkov, Minister of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation, and Luciana Barbosa de Oliveira Santos, Brazil’s Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation.
Presentations on behalf of the University of Tyumen were delivered by First Vice-Rector Andrey Tolstikov and Head of the Development Program Sergey Zenin, alongside vice-rectors and leading scholars from UFRJ and UFNT. During the roundtable, the parties engaged in detailed discussions on planning the first joint Russian–Brazilian research station in the Amazon — a "mirror" carbon research site.
