Brazilian-Russian research station in Amazonia announced at COP-29

At the UN Climate Change Conference (COP-29) in Baku, Azerbaijan, the Expert Council under the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation held an international meeting on carbon balance control chaired by the Minister of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation Valery Falkov.
The meeting of the Expert Council was attended by Adviser to the President of the Russian Federation and Special Presidential Representative on Climate Issues Ruslan Edelgeriev.

According to the statement released by the Expert Council, joint field research stations (so-called ‘mirror’ carbon polygons) will be launched in Brazil, Republika Srpska (Bosnia and Herzegovina) and Azerbaijan. ⠀

The First Vice-Rector of the University of Tyumen Andrey Tolstikov presented the Brazilian-Russian project. A Memorandum on the launch of the project was signed earlier this year in Tyumen by the representatives of the University of Tyumen and the Federal University of North Tocantins during the visit of the delegation of Brazilian University Rectors to Russia under the auspices of BRICS. Brazil is planning to invest 15 mln Brazilian reais (about 260 mln Russian rubles) at the first stage of the project.

The uniqueness of the Brazilian test site is its location in the interfluve of the Araguaia and Tocantins rivers - a little-studied territory of the Amazon on the border of two biomes: Cerrado (tropical savannas) and selva (tropical rainforests). Agricultural production in the Brazilian savannas has been highly resource-intensive, which requires a system of environmental monitoring. The most important objective of the project is to study the unique biological diversity of the region. In addition, special attention will be paid to the socio-economic consequences of climate change in the traditional nature management areas belonging to the region’s indigenous communities. ⠀

According to the Rector of the University Tyumen Ivan Romanchuk, international cooperation envisages the possibility of joint personnel training on biodiversity and climate change, including internships for young scientists and students. ⠀

Large industrial companies, both Russian, operating in Brazil, and Brazilian, have already expressed interest in the joint project. ⠀

It is expected that the new field research station will be included in the network of the existing research institutes and stations operating in the Brazilian Amazon. The university's activities are carried out within the framework of the strategic projects “Ecosystems of the Future” and “Biosafe World” included in the "Priority 2030" Program in accordance with the National Project "Science and Universities".
