A literature scholar from UTMN analyzed the first American novel by Nabokov
A literature scholar from the institute of social sciences and humanities for the first time commented in detail on text’s reminiscence layer associated with the Russian literature.
An article “Reception of Russian drama in V. Nabokov’s “Bend Sinister” written by Anastasia Drozdova came out in the journal “The New Philological Bulletin”.
The article is about the study of the allusions to works of Russian drama in Vladimir Nabokov’s “Bend Sinister” – the first work created by the author in the USA.
While contemplating on the subject of determinism Nabokov refers to plays by Pushkin and Gogol.
The author parodies the character of Boris Godunov, while underlining the dreamlike basis of the plot in Pushkin’s work.
While referencing the plot of “Little tragedies”, the author explains the situation in which the character comes face to face with the phantom nature of reality.
Nabokov transforms the composition of Gogol’s “The Government Inspector” and emphasizes the closeness of his characters to Nikolai Gogol’s.
As a result of the research, it was concluded that the allusions to classical works are used by the author as a part of an experiment with the boundaries of literary genres.
By showing the variability in the dramatic collusions, Nabokov engages intertextuality in different modes: comedic, heroic, satirical.
Allusions to texts where the heroes are a witness to a historic catastrophe allows the author to create an image of the world where the fate of the individual and humanity as a whole isn’t a subject to the logic of tragic determinism.
Reminiscence of the works by Pushkin and Gogol explicate the identity of the author as an heir to Russian classics.
