Center for urbanism at UTMN is developing a new approach to urban research

An issue about “Multiple Urban Studies” came out in a leading scientific periodical in the field of urban development research in Russia “Urban Studies and Practices”. It was prepared by the Center for urbanism at UTMN and the guest editor – Igor Stas, head of the master’s program “Conceptual urbanism” at UTMN.
The issue opens with an article by Igor Stas, who proposes a theory of multiple urbanism as a new theoretical model for describing and explaining urban studies in Russia. This conceptualization suggests taking into account the disciplinary structure of contemporary urbanism and its perception by scholars.

The concept of multiple urban studies means: considering the context when utilizing social science terms used in urban studies; development of new theories that explain urbanisms as different states of the “urban”; changing of urban studies to make them more actionable and formulating of a dialog between social studies and studies of cities and urbanization based on that.

The rest of the articles in this issue are dedicated to specific empirical research that fit this new theoretical model.

For example, texts from architectures that study the sphere of professional architecture while using methods from social anthropology are of particular interest. An alumnus of the master’s program “conceptual urbanism” and also a leading architect from the company “Brusnika” Aleksandra Tretyakova reconstructed the life of an architectural bureau and showcased the process of bringing the idea to an architectural project.

The second-year from the same program who is also an architect in architectural and branding company Devision Vladimir Rotberger wrote about the difficulties in communication between the architects and builders in Realization of a particular project. Postgraduate student from the Center for urbanism, historian Maksim Mochalin based on previous historiography and analyzing cases of constant updates to soviet general plans in the city of Novy Urengoy suggested an interpretation of “urban planning” as a performative practice of planners that is constantly evident in unfinished projects.

Aside from Tyumen researchers in this issue were also published authors from Moscow Architectural Institute, Institute of Economics and Industrial Engineering of the Siberian Branch of the RAS, The European University at Saint Petersburg, The Russian State University for the Humanities and Vysokovsky Graduate School of Urbanism.
New theoretical approach by the Centre for urbanism at UTMN provoked a lively reaction in the scientific community.

The concept of multiple urban studies was already discussed at Vysokovsky Graduate School of Urbanism and in Russian Presidential Academy of National Economy and Public Administration. Influential urbanist Telegram channels «Урбанизм как смысл жизни» (“urbanism is a way of life”), «Антрополог на районе» (“anthropologist in the area”) и «Urban Science» wrote about the articles in this issue.

Activity of the Centre for urbanism at UTMN is supported by the “revitalization of territories and new urban environment” project under the “Priorities-2030” federal program.
