Tyumen State University Foreign Students Get Involved with Chekhov's Works

As part of an educational project organized at Library No. 8, students of the preparatory department for foreigners of Tyumen State University took part in a festive event dedicated to the 165th anniversary of the birth of the great Russian writer A.P. Chekhov.

15 years ago the library was named after Anton Pavlovich Chekhov, that’s why the events aimed at introducing the Tyumen residents to the work of the famous author are taking place here.

Foreign students of the preparatory department prepared a thoughtful gift: they read excerpts from the stories “Kashtanka”, “The Lady with the Dog”, “The Burbot”, “The Bet” and “The Death of a Government Clerk” in Russian and in their first language. Chekhov’s works were translated in over a hundred languages and on that day in the library Chekhov’s stories were read in Arabic, Hindi, Spanish, English and Vietnamese.

Natalia Shevchik, vice-chairman of Tyumen Oblast Duma, that was at the event, gave high praise to the performance of the international students: “Its unbelievable that they are only learning Russian for 3-4 month! They are doing an amazing job! And bravo to their teachers!»

It should be added that right now the preparatory department of UTMN has 70 attendees from 31 countries. Foreigners are studying Russian classics with great interest and enjoy reading their works.
