UTMN’s new laboratory studies urban culture in Russia and abroad

The idea of the international project belongs to Lev Manovich, one the leading theorists of digital culture worldwide.
Since this year, the Cultural Trends Lab has begun its work at the UTMN Institute of Social Sciences and Humanities. It is headed by Lev Manovich, one of the world's leading digital culture theorists, media theorist, founder of the Cultural Analytics Lab, Professor at the City University of New York.

“The idea of our project is to develop new methods and apply them to the study of contemporary culture. We want to compare and describe it through big data on different events and places, not just through posts on the networks. We will develop the project in Tyumen and apply new methods to the cities in Russia and other countries,” says Lev Manovich.

The laboratory develops techniques for identification and effective use of cultural indices — quantitative and qualitative indicators of cultural activity, innovativeness, degree of globalization and cultural diversity. Based on these indicators, one can analyze the relationship between the creative and innovative potential of locations and their socio-economic and cultural-historical development, as well as create maps of territories that demonstrate these indices.
