UTMN summer school to study social anthropology

Summer schools 19 April 2019
Call for applications is open for the summer school ‘Reassembling Social Anthropology in Russia: Ethnography, Anthropology, History’ organised in 5-11 August in Tyumen, Russia, by the UTMN Institute for Social Sciences and Humanities, together with the Division of Social Anthropology of the Center for Historical Research, Higher School of Economics in St Petersburg.

The school’s aim is to rethink relations between history and anthropology in Russian anthropology. In Western anthropology, since 1980s history has become one of the leading modes of the anthropological analysis. It marked a radical repositioning of anthropology’s very subject. Grounding the subject of anthropological research in modern and contemporary history implied that its classic structural-functionalist, relativist or evolutionary ontologies were no longer valid. What makes anthropology in Russia distinct from this point of view is that it has been a ‘historical science’ from the 1930s onwards, identified in this way in the Soviet classification of academic disciplines. Many anthropologists in Russia today seek repositioning this discipline closer to present-oriented social sciences.

How are the relations with history conceptualised and deployed in Western and Russian anthropology today? What are the reasons are for turning to history or, conversely, staying clear from it for different anthropological traditions? The summer school is designed as a site for discussion of these questions drawing on the seminar work with the school’s lecturers as well as on discussion of research projects of ABDs (‘all but dissertation’) graduate students, recent PhDs and early career researchers in anthropology from Russia and abroad.

Some of the school’s seminar themes include those of the anthropology of time (Nikolai Ssorin-Chaikov), post-socialist, post-colonial and decolonisation perspectives (Serguei Oushakine), digital anthropology in the context of increasing demands for archiving ethnographic data (Alasandra Kasatkina), the legacies of the Cold War in the anthropology of energy and indigeneity (Petia Mankkova), and multispecies ethnography (Xenia Cherkaev). The school’s working language is English; Russian-English translation will be provided.

The summer schools’ participation is free; the school will provide accommodation, lunches and coffee-breaks. There is a limited number of travel grants that are available to cover travel expenses.
