The University of Tyumen is involved in a project aimed at improving the university's international competitiveness
Valerii Falkov, the UT rector has successfully supported a UT competitiveness program at the meeting of the Expert Council of the Russian Academic Excellence Project 5-100 under the chairmanship of Dmitrii Livanov, the Minister of Education and Science of the Russian Federation. The meeting was held on October 23 in Vladivostok.
Project 5-100 is aimed at maximizing the competitive position of a group of leading Russian universities in the global research and education market. Six more universities out of 18 who expressed interest in the project have finally joined it. The two-day meeting was held at the Far Eastern Federal University, where each participating university presented its long-term program of development.
As a result, the Council declared six best universities:
- Immanuel Kant Baltic Federal University
- I.M. Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University
- Peoples' Friendship University of Russia
- Siberian Federal University
- University of Tyumen
- South Ural State University
Valerii Falkov has determined the tasks for the university: "We did our best to be in the list of winners and now we have a lot more to do: to upgrade academics, to expand the recruiting policy outside the region and the country, to improve infrastructure, research activity, and introduce new management practices."
Vladimir Yakushev pointed out that "this project is another step for the Ministry of Education in the practice of improving the quality of higher education." According to the Governor of the region, it was very important that the participating universities had the opportunity to evaluate their potential, to make up programs of development and to meet the great challenge of joining the ranks of world-class universities.
"The decision-making Council is very competent, it includes a lot of foreign nationals, who are familiar with the goals of the higher school, and who have implemented many significant projects in this field. During the presentation, we were asked a lot of questions and we managed to enter the list of winners. This opens new horizons to the university and the region," - Vladimir Yakushev explained and emphasized that economic development is impossible without modern qualified workers.
It should be noted, that Russian representatives of the scientific and academic community, Government leaders, and world experts in the sphere of higher education participated in the meeting. Among those present were Andrei Volkov, professor of the Moscow School of Management SKOLKOVO Igor Agamirzian, CEO of the Russian Venture Company, Tsui Lap-Chee, founder of the Hong Kong University, Min Weifang, the Executive President of the Chinese Society for Education Development Strategies, Edward F. Crawley, the President of Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology.
Within two weeks, the Ministry of Education will make the final decision on including the universities in the project as well as on the subsidy rates which will be given to the chosen universities.
At the moment the project involves 15 leading Russian universities. During the two years of the Project 5-100 implementation they managed to make progress in the world rankings: in September nine universities entered the annual Times Higher Education Ranking, in October two participating universities entered top ten of the QS University Rankings: Emerging Europe & Central Asia.
